Northern Iran
LAHIJAN
- Between Rasht and Ramsar is Lahijan with plenty of old traditional Caspian-style houses with sloping roofs and open-work galleries.
- Also, there is the Mosque of the Four Guardians (Mosque of Chahar Oleya) dating back to 13th century with excellent wood carvings. One of the doors with wood carving is kept in the National Museum of Iran in Tehran.
- Tea farms are the attraction of Lahijan. It is considered that Iran's best tea comes from around Lahijan. Early attempts growing tea in Iran failed until about 1900 when plants brought from India were successfully harvested. Tea is a part of Iranian's diet. In every household or stores, they offer you tea out of courtesy.
- For a nice hike go to a tree covered hill SE of Lahijan called Devil Mountain (Sheitan Kuh).
- Just outside of Lahijan is a mausoleum built in 1419 for Sheikh Zahed , with a pyramid shape roof decorated with turquoise and yellow tiles. It is worth a stop to visit.
